You can protect your home from flooding by elevating it above the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) for your area. NFIP flood insurance policies provide a discount for every foot above the BFE a home is elevated up to four feet.

There are several methods used to elevate homes. Review chapter 8 of FEMA's Selecting Appropriate Mitigation Measures for Floodprone Structures for a detailed explanation of elevating techniques and requirements.

Be aware that some foundation types make elevating more challenging than others, such as slab on grade foundations. If elevation is not the easiest or most cost-effective choice for your home, consider other methods to flood-proof your home such as wet floodproofing or dry floodproofing.
